English as an Additional Language

At Great Bridge we are proud to welcome children and families from a wide variety of home backgrounds and pupils speak a diverse range of languages. Approximately 40% of pupils speak English as an additional language, and this ranges from pupils who are new to speaking English, to those who are either competent or fluent in English.

Our motto is that all pupils are valued, all pupils achieve and all pupils are equal, and this is reflected in the provision that we offer for pupils who have English as an additional language. Our learning environment is rich in visual symbols and print, which helps children to develop their vocabulary and through a key focus on Oracy in all lessons, the children have many opportunities to develop effective speaking and listening skills.

For pupils who are new to speaking English or in the early stages of acquiring English, we run a range of interventions from Racing to English and Wellcomm (Speech and Language support) to basic maths and literacy skills as needed to ensure that the children make good progress.
